No. 19 Michigan State 70, Oakland 52: Keith Appling scored a game-high 20 points to lead four Michigan State players in double figures, and the Spartans pulled away from the visiting Golden Grizzlies for their fourth consecutive win.
Adreian Payne scored 15 points and grabbed nine rebounds for the Spartans while Denzel Valentine collected 10 points, 10 rebounds and six assists. Derrick Nix added 10 points and seven boards as Michigan State shot 53.1 percent from the floor.
Michigan State (4-1) never trailed, using a 12-2 run midway through the first half to pull away. It led by as many as 15 before taking a 34-21 halftime lead.
The Golden Grizzlies (2-4) pulled within 43-39 with 12:50 left, but the Spartans reeled off eight straight points. Oakland got within four one more time at 55-51 before Michigan State closed the game on a 15-1 run.
Duke Mondy collected 16 points, six steals and five assists to lead Oakland, and Corey Petros added 14 points and nine rebounds. Oakland got just four points from its bench.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Oakland has made a 3-pointer in 742 consecutive games, the seventh-longest active streak in the nation, but was just 3-of-21 on Friday. … The Spartans, playing their first full game without freshman sensation Gary Harris (shoulder), committed 20 turnovers but held a 41-22 advantage on the boards. … Oakland dropped to 0-11 against the Spartans and 2-30 against Big Ten opponents.
