No. 19 Michigan State 74, Boise State 70: Keith Appling had 22 points and seven assists and spurred a late comeback charge as the host Spartans stymied the Broncos’ upset bid.

Appling hit the go-ahead basket with 4:01 left and then stole the ball and drove for a layup 31 seconds later as Michigan State (3-1) used a 14-3 spurt to overcome a five-point deficit. Appling added a key three-point play with 15 seconds left to give the Spartans a 73-68 lead.

Derrick Marks scored 19 of his career-high 24 points in the second half and Mikey Thompson added 14 points for Boise State (3-1).

Michigan State led 43-34 on Appling’s 3-pointer with 13:34 to play. The Spartans had a six-point lead with just over 11 minutes left before the Broncos rolled off 11 straight points to take a 61-56 lead on Marks’ driving hoop with 8:24 remaining.

Boise State led 22-13 after Thompson’s 3-pointer with 8:35 left in the first half. The Spartans answered with a 16-2 run en route to a 38-32 advantage at halftime.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Spartans point guard Travis Trice (concussion) missed his third straight game. … Boise State is 1-18 on the road against ranked teams with the lone win coming at Nevada during the 2004-05 campaign. … Michigan State guard Gary Harris left the contest early in the first half with a shoulder injury and did not return.
