Final Scoring Summary
Recap
Sacramento State 74, Utah 71: Sophomore guard Dylan Garrity scored 19 points and dished off five assists as the visiting Hornets rallied from a 10-point second half deficit to upset the Utes.
Junior guard Glen Dean led Utah (1-1) with 16 points, including four 3-pointers, but missed two 3-point attempts in the final five seconds that would have forced overtime.
Sacramento State (3-0), playing its first road game after a pair of easy home wins over UC Merced and Cal State Bakersfield, jumped out to an 11-6 lead highlighted by a 3-pointer by Garrity, last season's Big Sky Conference Freshman of the Year.
But Utah responded with a 23-12 run that included a pair of 3-pointers by Dean en route to a 38-34 halftime lead.
The Utes opened the second half with an 8-2 run that included Dean's fourth 3-pointer of the night to increase their lead to 46-36. But the Hornets chipped away and finally regained the lead, 72-71, on a Garrity jumper with 1:29 remaining and Joe Eberhard's free throws with 12 seconds left were the final points.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Guard Jarred DuBois, who averaged 10.1 points per game last season at Loyola Marymount but is eligible to play this season for the Utes because of the NCAA's graduate transfer rule, started and scored 13 points. ... Utah, which failed to post a winning record at the Jon. M. Huntsman Center for only the second time in 43 years last season (6-9) and for the first time since 1972-73, fell to 1-1 at home. ... Hornets forward John Dickson had 16 points and six rebounds, and needs nine points to become the 10th player in Sacramento State school history to score 1,000 points in his career.
