Final Scoring Summary
Recap
No. 6 North Carolina State 72, Penn State 55: Freshman T.J. Warren scored 22 points off the bench as the Wolfpack used an early second-half surge to run away from the Nittany Lions in the first round of the Puerto Rico Tip-Off tournament.
C.J. Leslie finished with 14 points and Rodney Purvis added 12 for North Carolina State (2-0), which will face Massachusetts in Friday's semifinals.
The only ranked team in this tournament, the Wolfpack built their first double-digit advantage midway through the first half and took a 35-26 lead into the break behind torrid shooting from Purvis and Warren.
A pair of free throws from Tim Frazier moved Penn State (1-1) to within seven points only 45 seconds into the second half. But a barrage of 3-pointers from Warren and Scott Wood capped a 26-8 run over the next 10 minutes as the Wolfpack stretched their lead to 63-38 with 9:15 remaining.
Frazier scored 23 points to lead the Nittany Lions, who shot only 31.7 percent from the field.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Purvis and Warren combined to hit 9 of their 12 field-goal attempts in the first half, including all four of their 3-pointers. … North Carolina State received all of its points off the bench from Warren. … Penn State is shooting 33.6 percent through two games.
