Final Scoring Summary
Recap
Norfolk State 86, Missouri 84: Kyle O’Quinn had 26 points and 14 rebounds, including a clutch tip-in in the final minute, and the Spartans became just the fifth No. 15 seed ever to win a game in the NCAA tournament with a stunning upset of the Tigers.
After Norfolk State (26-9) saw its 81-75 lead evaporate in the last two minutes, O’Quinn tapped in a Chris McEachin miss and was fouled for a three-point play to go back up 84-81.
Up 86-84 with 3.8 seconds left, O’Quinn missed two free throws that could have iced the game, but Missouri’s Phil Pressey misfired on a 3-pointer from the left wing at the buzzer.
The Spartans, champions of the MEAC, are the first No. 15 seed to upset a No. 2 seed since 2001, when Hampton — also from the MEAC — knocked off Iowa State. No. 15 seeds moved to 5-105 all-time in the tournament.
Missouri (30-5) was considered a strong candidate to reach the Final Four for the first time in school history, but the Tigers appeared to grow more nervous as the game wore on.
Michael Dixon scored 22 points off the bench and Phil Pressey and Marcus Denmon added 20 apiece, but senior Kim English mustered only two points on 1-of-7 shooting.
The Spartans entered the game as a 31-percent 3-point shooting team, but McEachin and Pendarvis Williams hit four 3’s each to lead a 10-for-19 shooting effort from long range.
Norfolk State moves on to face seventh-seeded Florida in the Round of 32 on Sunday.
Game Notebook: This was the Spartans’ first-ever NCAA tournament game … Norfolk State has now won eight straight and 10 of its past 11 … Missouri shot 13 of 29 from beyond the arc.
