SAN DIEGO STATE 74, COLORADO STATE 66: Jamaal Franklin matched a career-high with 31 points and set a career-best with 16 rebounds and the No. 25 Aztecs moved into a tie for first place in the Mountain West with the victory over the visiting Rams.
Xavier Thames scored 15 points and James Rahon had 14 points and made four 3-pointers for San Diego State (22-6, 8-4), which is tied with New Mexico and UNLV with two regular-season games remaining.
Wes Eikmeier and Dorian Green scored 14 points apiece for Colorado State (17-10, 6-6), which is only 2-9 on the road and has lost 10 of the last 11 meetings with the Aztecs.
The Rams led 52-51 after a 3-pointer by Jesse Carr with just over eight minutes left but Thames scored five points during a 7-0 run that saw the Aztecs take the lead for good.
Colorado State pulled within 58-57 on Eikmeier’s driving hoop with 4:42 left before Franklin scored the Aztecs’ next seven points to help them boost the lead to eight points with 1:37 to play.
San Diego State’s last first-half lead was at 3-2 and Colorado State took a 21-12 lead midway through the half after back-to-back 3-pointers by Eikmeier and Kaipo Sabas. Franklin scored San Diego State’s next 12 points and the Aztecs rallied within 34-30 at intermission.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Aztecs guard Chase Tapley had only five points on 1-of-7 shooting and hit only 4 of 24 shots in two games against the Rams. … Colorado State forward Will Bell returned from a one-game absence because of a knee injury and had four points. … Rahon was 1 for 10 from 3-point range over the previous four games. … Colorado State has lost nine straight games on San Diego State’s homecourt.
