Final Scoring Summary
Recap
Led by Carl “Taye” Jones, St. Joseph’s handed No. 17 Creighton its first loss of the season, 80-71.
With the crowd praising him with chants “All Day Taye,” Jones scored 29 points for the Hawks and dished out five assists.
The Hawks (7-3) took their first lead with an 11-0 run midway through the first half and never trailed the rest of the way.
Sophomore big men C.J. Aiken and Ronald Roberts Jr. altered shots in the lane, helping St. Joseph’s to hold Creighton (7-1) well below its season average of 87 points
Aiken, the nation’s leading shot-blocker, picked up his second foul with 9:37 remaining in the first half and didn’t return until after the break. Roberts was more than able to fill the lane in Aiken’s absence, grabbing five rebounds and scoring seven points in that time frame to help give the Hawks a 35-30 lead at the break. Roberts also had the play of the game with a monstrous fast-break dunk over Creighton guard Antoine Young. Roberts finished with 12 points.
Sophomore Doug McDermott scored 26 points after being held scoreless in last year’s win over St. Joseph’s in Omaha, Neb. It was his seventh straight 20-point performance. He added 10 rebounds for his fourth straight double-double. Young scored his 1,000th career point and finished with 15.
St. Joseph’s inducted Creighton President Father Timothy Lannon into its Hall of Fame at halftime. Lannon was president of St. Joseph’s from 2003 to 2011.
Hawks head coach Phil Martelli moved two wins away from tying the St. Joseph’s career record.
