San Diego Padres vs Philadelphia Phillies Box Score on Aug 18, 2019

Joey Lucchesi pitched six strong innings and Austin Hedges went 4-for-4 with a tiebreaking home run in the seventh as the San Diego Padres defeated the host Philadelphia Phillies 3-2 on a steamy Sunday afternoon.

Phillies superstar Bryce Harper left the game after five innings because of dehydration, the team said. The heat index on the field exceeded 100 degrees.

Luis Urias also homered for the Padres, who took two of three games in the series.

Lucchesi (8-7) allowed two runs on three hits, with two walks and four strikeouts. He won for the first time in seven starts since July 7.

Padres left-hander Matt Strahm and right-handers Craig Stammen, Andres Munoz and Kirby Yates combined for three innings of scoreless, one-hit relief. Yates struck out the side in the ninth for his 35th save in 38 opportunities.

The Phillies took an early lead as Harper walked with two outs in the bottom of the first, moved to second on a wild pitch and scored on Jean Segura's double to center field.

The Padres moved in front in the fourth. Hunter Renfroe drew a leadoff walk and, two outs later, Urias lined a 2-2 pitch over the wall in right for his second homer of the season, making it 2-1.

The Phillies tied it at 2 in the sixth as Adam Haseley, who replaced Harper, walked with two outs and scored on Segura's double to center.

Hedges broke the tie with one out in the seventh, lining an 0-2 pitch from Phillies right-hander Jared Hughes (3-5) over the left-field wall. It was Hedges' ninth homer, and the four-hit game raised his average to .197.

Phillies starter Jason Vargas, a veteran left-hander acquired from the New York Mets before the July 31 trade deadline, went 5 2/3 innings. He allowed two runs on six hits, with two walks and four strikeouts.
