New York Yankees vs Oakland Athletics Box Score on Sep 05, 2018

The Oakland Athletics celebrated the induction of the first class of their Hall of Fame with a four-run first inning Wednesday night that led to an 8-2 victory over the New York Yankees in Oakland, Calif.

The win was the second in three games against the Yankees (87-53) for the A's (84-57), who moved within 3 1/2 games in the race for the first wild-card spot in the American League and the home-field advantage in the single-elimination playoff game.

The game followed an on-field ceremony in which Charlie Finley, Reggie Jackson, Catfish Hunter, Rollie Fingers, Rickey Henderson, Dennis Eckersley and Dave Stewart were honored. Green jackets were presented to signify their permanent placement in the A's Hall of Fame. The blazers were given to the surviving players plus the son of late team owner Finley and the widow of late pitcher Hunter.

After Mike Fiers (11-6) pitched out of a bases-loaded jam in the top of the first, the A's ripped Luis Severino (17-7) for three doubles in a four-run uprising that was aided by two wild pitches and two passed balls on Yankees catcher Gary Sanchez.

Stephen Piscotty added a two-run single in the third inning, and Matt Chapman drove in runs in the fourth and sixth with an infield out and a single, helping the A's take an 8-0 lead en route to evening the season series with the Yankees at 3-3.

Severino was pulled two outs into the third inning, having allowed six runs (five earned) and six hits. He walked one and struck out three.

Sanchez ended Fiers' shutout bid in the seventh when he followed a walk to Aaron Hicks with his 15th home run, his first since June 20.

Fiers was taken out at that point, charged with two runs on three hits in six-plus innings. He walked three and struck out five.

The right-hander improved to 4-0 since joining the A's in a trade with the Detroit Tigers in August. The A's have won all six games in which Fiers has started.

Ramon Laureano and Khris Davis smacked two doubles apiece for the A's, who improved to 4-3 on a 10-game homestand that continues Friday night with the opener of a three-game series against the Texas Rangers.

Jed Lowrie also had two hits for Oakland, which out-hit New York 11-5.

Giancarlo Stanton had a double for the Yankees, who lost for the sixth time in their past 10 games.

New York continues a nine-game trip with three at Seattle beginning Friday night.
