Angels erase early deficit against Yankees

NEW YORK -- Albert Pujols began a big comeback for the Los Angeles Angels with a third-inning RBI single and delivered the go-ahead hit with a seventh-inning RBI single Thursday night as the Angels routed the reeling New York Yankees 10-5 at Yankee Stadium.

The Angels (38-38) trailed 5-1 in the second inning but scored the final nine runs to win the rubber game of a three-game series with the Yankees (39-31), who have lost eight of nine.

Cameron Maybin hit a leadoff homer and scored three runs. Yunel Escobar (2-for-4) had an RBI single in the third inning and Luis Valbuena laced a run-scoring single in the sixth for the Angels, who scored four runs in the seventh and two in the eighth.

Kole Calhoun tied the score with a sacrifice fly in the seventh and Andrelton Simmons capped the rally with a two-run double off Dellin Betances.

Cliff Pennington (3-for-3 with a walk. three runs) doubled with one out in the eighth and scored on an errant pickoff throw by Domingo German. Maybin, who went to third on the error, scored on Calhoun's second sacrifice fly.

Yusmeiro Petit (2-0) picked up the win by striking out three in two perfect innings in relief of starter Jesse Chavez, who allowed five runs, seven hits and two walks whiles striking out three in four innings.

Luis Severino (5-3) took the loss for the Yankees after allowing six runs (five earned), eight hits and two walks while striking out five in six-plus innings. Both batters he faced in the seventh, Pennington and Maybin, reached and scored.

Starlin Castro had an RBI single in the first inning for the Yankees. Brett Gardner hit into a run-scoring groundout in the second, when Aaron Judge launched his major league-leading 25th homer, a three-run shot.

The Angels went up 1-0 just two pitches into the game on Maybin's fifth career leadoff homer.

The Yankees tied the score in the bottom of the first when Judge and Matt Holliday drew two-out walks before Judge raced home on Castro's single.

Judge also played a big role in the Yankees' four-run second. Chris Carter doubled with one out, went to third on a single by Ronald Torreyes and scored when Torreyes was forced at second on Gardner's grounder. After Aaron Hicks singled, Judge launched a mammoth three-run homer to center field.

The Angels pulled within 5-3 in the third inning on consecutive two-out RBI singles by Pujols and Escobar.

NOTES: The Yankees recalled LHP Tyler Webb from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre and optioned IF/OF Rob Refsnyder to the same affiliate. ... Yankees 1B Greg Bird (right ankle) received a cortisone shot Tuesday and hopes to resume baseball activities this weekend. ... The Angels activated RHP Huston Street from the 10-day disabled list and optioned RHP Mike Morin to Triple-A Salt Lake City. Street has been out all season with lat and shoulder injuries. ... Angels RHP Matt Shoemaker (right forearm), who hoped to start Sunday against the Boston Red Sox, is still feeling discomfort and will be re-examined in California.
