PITTSBURGH -- Chris Owings' single in the 14th inning scored David Peralta and gave the Arizona Diamondbacks a 6-5 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Wednesday at PNC Park.

Peralta led off the 14th with a single off losing pitcher Jhan Marinez (0-1). He advanced to second on Paul Goldschmidt's ground out. Jake Lamb was intentionally walked and Owings ended the marathon with a ground single to right.

T.J. McFarland (3-0) pitched three innings of scoreless relief to get the win after a one-hour, 33-minute rain delay halted play after the 12th.

The Pirates twice came back to tie in what would have been their last at-bats. Jordy Mercer's solo homer in the bottom of the 11th extended the game after Nick Ahmed hit a solo shot in the top of the inning for a 5-4 Arizona lead.

In the ninth, trailing 4-3, Pittsburgh knotted the game against Arizona closer Fernando Rodney. Francisco Cervelli and Andrew McCutchen walked, and first baseman Goldschmidt bobbled Gift Ngoepe's sacrifice bunt to load the bases.

Owings, the Diamondbacks' second baseman, made a terrific stop of Mercer's shot up the middle and turned a double play, but the tying run scored. The Pirates had a chance to win it, but Josh Bell struck out with runners on second and third.

Arizona scored two runs in the third inning off Pirates right-hander Chad Kuhl when Gregor Blanco and Goldschmidt walked and Lamb tripled.

Kuhl pitched five innings, giving up the two runs. He allowed three hits, struck out four and walked three.

Right-hander Zack Godley started for Arizona and retired the first 11 batters. He pitched six innings, giving up three runs and seven hits. He walked one and struck out six.

McCutchen and Jose Osuna began the Pirates' fifth with successive doubles to make it 2-1. After Mercer grounded out, Gregory Polanco, who injured his ankle Monday playing right field and had to leave the game on a cart, was healthy enough to line a single to center to score Osuna with the tying run.

Leading off the sixth, Goldschmidt homered off his former teammate, Daniel Hudson, who relieved Godley. Lamb doubled, went to third on Owings' sacrifice and scored on Chris Iannetta's infield out for a 4-2 lead. Pittsburgh pulled a run closer in the bottom of the inning when Josh Harrison walked, John Jaso singled and David Freese hit into a force out, scoring Harrison.

NOTES: RHP Jameson Taillon, who had testicular cancer surgery May 8, will make his second rehab start Friday for the Pirates' Triple-A Indianapolis affiliate. ... LHP Robbie Ray's shutout Tuesday was the first by an Arizona lefty since Joe Saunders on April 27, 2012, in Miami. ... Arizona 1B Paul Goldschmidt was 2-for-17 before hitting his 12th homer of the season in the sixth inning.
