Recap

Cardinals 3, Nationals 2: Yadier Molina’s sixth-inning single snapped a 2-2 tie and Shelby Miller matched a career high with eight strikeouts as visiting St. Louis captured the series opener.

Molina’s single off Washington starter Dan Haren (1-3) scored Matt Holliday, who was hit by a pitch to lead off the sixth. Allen Craig finished with two hits, including a two-run double in the third.

Miller (3-1), making his fifth major-league start, allowed two runs on four hits in 6 2/3 innings. The shaky St. Louis bullpen made the lead hold up as Trevor Rosenthal worked around a hit and a walk in a scoreless eighth and Edward Mujica pitched a perfect ninth for his second save.

St. Louis grabbed a 2-0 lead on Craig’s double to deep center, scoring Pete Kozma and Matt Carpenter. The Nationals tied the game in the fourth on run-scoring doubles by Ian Desmond and Anthony Rendon, whose first major-league hit scored Desmond to make it 2-2.

Haren allowed three runs on six hits in five-plus innings as Washington lost for the seventh time in 10 games. Craig Stammen came on with the bases loaded and no outs in the sixth after the Cardinals took the lead, but got a double play and a strikeout.

GAME NOTEBOOK: St. Louis 1B Matt Adams was scratched after feeling soreness in his right side during batting practice. Adams is hitting .542 in 24 at-bats. … Rendon, getting his second start at third base for the injured Ryan Zimmerman, finished 1-for-4. … Washington did not have closer Rafael Soriano, whose wife gave birth to a boy Monday.
