Recap

Nationals 6, Padres 5 (10): Chad Tracy hit a pinch-hit tiebreaking home run in the 10th inning and Adam LaRoche blasted two homers and drove in four runs as visiting Washington edged San Diego.

After the Padres forced extra innings with two runs in the ninth against Rafael Soriano (1-1), Tracy came to the plate with two outs and launched a 1-1 pitch from Huston Street (0-3) into the right-field seats. The Padres put runners on the corners in the 10th before Drew Storen retired Chris Denorfia and Everth Cabrera for his first save.

Ryan Zimmerman added a solo homer for the Nationals, who have won eight of the last 10 meetings against the Padres. LaRoche gave Washington a 3-2 lead in the fourth with a three-run blast off rookie Burch Smith (0-1), who gave up five runs while striking out eight over 5 1/3 frames.

Jedd Gyorko belted a solo homer with two outs in the sixth to cut the deficit to 5-3, and the Padres had two runners on with two outs in the seventh before Tyler Clippard replaced Gio Gonzalez and retired Jesus Guzman to end the inning.

The Padres rallied in the ninth against Soriano when Denorfia reached base on Zimmerman's throwing error and scored on Chase Headley's two-out single. Headley moved to third on Yonder Alonso's pinch-hit single and scored the tying run on Kyle Blanks' single to left field.
