Recap

Padres 8, Giants 7 (12): Yonder Alonso scored from third base when second baseman Marco Scutaro misplayed Nick Hundley’s grounder in the 12th inning and host San Diego rallied from an early five-run deficit for its third straight win.

Alonso hit his third double of the game with one out in the 12th off Sergio Romo (1-2) and moved to third on Jedd Gyorko’s single before scoring when Hundley’s possible inning-ending grounder got past Scutaro. Joe Thatcher (1-0) worked a scoreless 12th inning for the win.

Pablo Sandoval had three hits for San Francisco, which has lost four in a row. Brandon Crawford belted his career-high fifth home run in the second to give the Giants a 3-0 lead, and the Giants added two runs in the third on consecutive RBI doubles by Pablo Sandoval and Buster Posey.

The Padres answered in the fourth when they sent 10 batters to the plate and scored a season-high six runs. Alonso sparked the rally with a two-run double off Barry Zito after Andres Torres’ error on Carlos Quentin’s fly ball with one out opened the floodgates.

Zito exited after giving up a two-out, two-run double to Chris Denorfia later in the fourth, marking his second straight poor road outing. Zito was charged with six runs (one earned) over 3 2/3 innings after giving up nine runs in 2 2/3 frames at Milwaukee on April 16.

GAME NOTEBOOK: San Francisco is 17-2 in games started by Zito since Aug. 2 of last season. Zito is winless in his last seven starts at Petco Park. … Denorfia recorded his third assist of the season when he threw out Sandoval trying to leg out a double in the seventh. …Padres starter Eric Stults gave up five runs on four hits over four innings.
