Recap

Rays 1, Athletics 0:
Matt Joyce belted a solo home run and Jeremy Hellickson pitched seven innings as Tampa Bay defeated visiting Oakland for the second time in two nights.

Hellickson (1-1) had Oakland hitters off balance all night, allowing three hits and one walk while striking out six. Joel Peralta pitched a perfect eighth inning and Fernando Rodney worked around an error in the ninth for his second save as the Rays earned their fourth shutout of the season.

Oakland starter Jarrod Parker (0-3), coming off three rough starts, gave up six hits and one run in 6 1/3 innings. The Athletics were shut out for the first time since opening day against Seattle.

Joyce led off the second inning with a line-drive home run into the right field stands, his first since a walk-off blast in the second game of the season. Hellickson did not allow a leadoff batter to reach until the fifth when Derek Norris walked, but he was erased when Josh Reddick lined into a double play.

Rays second baseman Ryan Roberts dropped a Coco Crisp pop up in the ninth with one out, but Rodney struck out John Jaso and got Seth Smith on a groundout to end it. Jose Molina recorded his second straight two-hit game for the Rays.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Tampa Bay CF Desmond Jennings completed a rare unassisted double play in the third inning when he caught a blooper by Crisp and jogged in to tag first base after runner Eric Sogard had taken off on contact and could not get back. … Oakland RHP Evan Scribner, who pitched in the first game of the series, was optioned to Triple-A Sacramento on Saturday and RHP Jesse Chavez was recalled from the River Cats to take his spot in the bullpen. … The Rays go for their first series sweep of the season Sunday, sending Roberto Hernandez to the mound against Oakland’s Tommy Milone.
