Recap

Athletics 2, Yankees 0: Adam Rosales led off the game with a home run and A.J. Griffin worked into the eighth inning as visiting Oakland edged New York in the opener of the three-game series.

Griffin (3-2) allowed five hits with one walk before leaving after facing one batter in the eighth, and Grant Balfour struck out Eduardo Nunez for his fourth save after Sean Doolittle recorded the first two outs in the ninth. Nate Freiman went 3-for-3 for Oakland, which has won four of its last five games.

Rosales hit CC Sabathia’s first pitch of the game into the left-field bleachers for his first home run and the Athletics added a run in the sixth on Derek Norris’ RBI single. Sabathia (4-3) allowed two runs over six frames and lost for the first time in his last seven starts against Oakland.

Brett Gardner and Jayson Nix had two hits apiece for New York, which fell to 6-2 on its 10-game homestand. The Yankees placed runners at second and third in the third inning, but Griffin induced a pop fly from Vernon Wells to end the threat.

Griffin, who allowed 11 earned runs over his previous two starts, cruised through seven frames before Gardner led off the eighth with a bunt single. Doolittle replaced Griffin and retired Robinson Cano before Wells grounded into an inning-ending double play.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Rosales is the second player to homer off Sabathia on the first pitch of the game. The Tigers’ Austin Jackson accomplished the feat in 2010. … Athletics LF Seth Smith went hitless in five at-bats with four strikeouts. … Oakland SS Jed Lowrie, who entered the game batting .195 over his previous 10 games, went 3-for-5 and improved his batting average to .339.
