Recap

Yankees 5, Blue Jays 3: Robinson Cano hit one of three New York home runs and Hiroki Kuroda overcame a shaky start to throw six strong innings in a win over visiting Toronto.

Kuroda (3-1) and three relievers limited Toronto to one hit over the final seven innings, capped by Mariano Rivera's seventh save. Jayson Nix went 2-for-3 with a run scored while Ichiro Suzuki added a pair of hits and stole his first base of the season.

Mark Buehrle (1-1) continued his struggles against the Yankees, surrendering five runs on seven hits over 5 1/3 innings. The veteran left-hander fell to 1-9 all-time against New York.

Edwin Encarnacion put Toronto up 2-0 in the first, belting a first-pitch fastball over the left-field fence to score Jose Bautista ahead of him. Brett Lawrie's opposite-field blast to right made it 3-0 in the second, but New York countered in the bottom half on Vernon Wells' solo blast to center.

Cano's three-run shot rocketed the Yankees in front for good in the third as he drilled a 3-1 pitch into the right-field seats for his seventh home run of the season. Francisco Cervelli's solo shot in the fourth extended the lead, and Toronto didn't challenge the rest of the way.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Encarnacion has four first-pitch home runs in 2013. ... The Yankees lead the American League with 31 home runs while the Blue Jays sit second with 28. ... Toronto manager John Gibbons was ejected for the second straight day after arguing a reversal of a call at first base. Yankees DH Ben Francisco was originally ruled out, but the umpires conferred and ruled that 1B Encarnacion bobbled the throw from Lawrie, ruling Francisco safe.
