Recap

Rangers 2, Twins 1: Nick Tepesch allowed one earned run in 6 2/3 innings as visiting Texas took the opener of the four-game series.

Tepesch (2-1), who was making his fourth major league start, allowed five hits, did not walk a batter and made just one mistake, a solo home run by Josh Willingham in the seventh that cut the deficit to 2-1. Ian Kinsler had three hits and Nelson Cruz had two hits and an RBI to lead the Rangers.

Texas took a 1-0 lead in the third when Adrian Beltre doubled to deep center to start the inning off Minnesota starter Vance Worley (0-3) and came home on Cruz’s one-out single to right. Texas made it 2-0 in the fifth after No. 9 hitter Leonys Martin singled with one out and scampered home on a two-out double to left by Elvis Andrus.

Tepesch, who retired the first 12 batters, departed after allowing two-out singles to Chris Parmalee and Trevor Plouffe in the seventh after Willingham’s home run. Reliever Robbie Ross got pinch-hitter Ryan Doumit to ground out to short to end the inning.

The Twins loaded the bases with one out in the eighth but Tanner Scheppers forced Willingham to hit into an inning-ending 6-4-3 double play on a 3-2 pitch. Joe Nathan pitched a scoreless ninth for his seventh save.
