Recap

Nationals 3, Marlins 0:
Gio Gonzalez pitched six solid innings and delivered a home run as Washington made it two straight shutouts over Miami at chilly Nationals Park.

Gonzalez (1-0), who won a major league-best 21 games in 2012, allowed two hits, walked two and struck out five. Relievers Ryan Mattheus and Drew Storen bridged the gap to closer Rafael Soriano, who worked around a single and a walk in the ninth inning to earn his second save.

Kevin Slowey (0-1), making his first major-league start since Sept. 26, 2011, yielded a run and four hits in 5 1/3 innings. The Marlins put their leadoff batter on base in each of the fifth, sixth and seventh innings, but were hurt by a pair of double plays.

With one out in the fifth inning, Gonzalez drove Slowey's first pitch - a hanging curveball - through a stiff breeze and into the left field seats for his second career
homer. Washington put runners at first and third with one out in the sixth, but reliever Ryan Webb induced a double play grounder from Ian Desmond.

The Nationals took a 2-0 lead on a fielder's choice by Denard Span in the seventh inning, with an assist to pinch runner Roger Bernadina for getting tangled up with second baseman Donovan Solano. Washington made it 3-0 in the eighth when Bryce Harper led off with a double and Ryan Zimmerman drove him in with a single.

GAME NOTEBOOK:
Miami 1B Casey Kotchman suffered an apparent hamstring injury after grounding into a double play in the fifth inning and was replaced by
Greg Dobbs. ... Temperature at game time was 50 degrees with a northwest wind at 20 mph, which helped the teams combine for only 10 hits. ... Miami
manager Mike Redmond caught Slowey's major league debut in 2007 while with Minnesota.
