Recap

Yankees 7, Astros 4: Hiroki Kuroda worked seven scoreless innings and Travis Hafner drove in three runs as New York held off visiting Houston.

Kuroda (4-1) struck out eight and yielded four hits to win his fourth straight decision. Lyle Overbay hit a solo home run, Brennan Boesch added an RBI and Jayson Nix drove in a run for the Yankees, who have won five of six.

Philip Humber (0-6) allowed four runs and nine hits to suffer the loss as the Astros fell for the fifth time in six games. Chris Carter hit a two-run homer in the eighth and Jose Altuve doubled in two runs in the ninth for Houston before Mariano Rivera was summoned from the bullpen to record the final out and his 10th save.

The Astros put at least two runners on in each of the first three innings but could not capitalize against Kuroda. New York made the most of its early opportunities and pushed a run across in the first when Hafner’s single scored Brett Gardner.

The Yankees manufactured another run in the third when Ichiro Suzuki struck out but reached on a wild pitch, stole second and came home on Hafner’s single. Boesch’s bases-loaded groundout and Nix’s RBI single in the fifth made it a 4-0 gap.
