Tigers 6, Rays 3: Miguel Cabrera went 4-for-4 with two homers and Max Scherzer became the first pitcher in 27 years to begin the season 12-0 as visiting Detroit defeated Tampa Bay.

Cabrera finished with three RBIs and Prince Fielder added a two-run homer in the eighth inning as the Tigers snapped a three-game losing streak. Scherzer allowed three runs on four hits while fanning nine over seven innings to become baseball's first 12-0 starter since Roger Clemens of the Boston Red Sox opened the 1986 season with 14 straight wins.

Ben Zobrist and Wil Myers each belted solo homers for the Rays, who have lost seven of their last nine meetings against Detroit. Tampa Bay starter Alex Colome (1-1) went six innings, yielding four runs on four hits to take his first career loss.

Austin Jackson walked to open the game and scored on Cabrera’s blast to left field. Cabrera added a solo homer to left on the first pitch of the fourth inning and Fielder followed with a double, later scoring on a wild pitch to extend the lead to 4-0.

Scherzer retired the first 11 batters he faced before Zobrist’s home run while Myers hit a solo shot in the fifth and Luke Scott added an RBI double in the seventh to bring the Rays to within 4-3. Cabrera doubled and Fielder hit a towering blast to right field to provide some insurance in the eighth, and Joaquin Benoit pitched a scoreless ninth for his fifth save.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Tampa Bay 3B Evan Longoria left the game before the third inning after irritating a foot injury while running to first base in the second. … The Rays announced 2012 American League Cy Young Award winner David Price will return to the rotation Tuesday at Houston.
