Recap

Brewers 6, Reds 4: Rookie Khris Davis blasted two home runs - including a go-ahead, two-run blast in the eighth inning - as visiting Milwaukee won the opener of the three-game series.

Davis’ homer off Alfredo Simon (5-4) with one out in the eighth gave the Brewers a 5-3 lead, and fellow rookie Scooter Gennett added a solo shot. Rob Wooten (2-0) recorded a scoreless inning for the win and Jim Henderson earned his 20th save after working around a two-out single in the ninth.

Brandon Phillips homered for Cincinnati, which fell 3 1/2 games behind first-place Pittsburgh in the National League Central but maintained its seven-game lead over Arizona for the second wild-card spot. Phillips tied the contest at 3-3 with his leadoff homer in the sixth off Yovani Gallardo, who yielded three runs (two earned) over six frames.

Reds starter Homer Bailey surrendered three runs over six innings and Logan Ondrusek tossed a scoreless seventh before the Brewers pulled ahead. Cincinnati closed within 6-4 on Zack Cozart’s RBI single in the eighth, but Ryan Hanigan grounded out against Brandon Kintzler with two runners on to end the threat.

Davis, who recorded the first multi-homer game of his career and drove in four runs, is 14-for-30 with five home runs and nine RBIs during a nine-game hitting streak. Gennett went 3-for-4 as he extended his hitting streak to seven games.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Brewers CF Carlos Gomez went 0-for-3 after missing the previous six games with a right knee sprain. … Milwaukee remained the only team in the major leagues without a loss when leading after eight innings. The Brewers are 47-0 in that category. … Reds RHP Nick Christiani tossed a perfect ninth inning in his major-league debut.
