Recap

Reds 5, Angels 4: Joey Votto singled off the glove of first baseman Albert Pujols with one out in the ninth to give Cincinnati the win over visiting Los Angeles and even the season-opening series.

Shin Soo-Choo was hit by a pitch by Angels reliever Scott Downs (0-1) to start the inning, was sacrificed to second and came home when Votto’s two-hopper to the right of Pujols was deflected into shallow right field. Votto had two walks to go along with his game-winning single for the Reds.

After Cincinnati third baseman Todd Frazier booted a potential double-play ball off the bat of Pujols with none out in the eighth, the Angels tied the score at 4 on a one-out run-scoring ground out by Mark Trumbo. Aroldis Chapman (1-0) worked the ninth to earn the win for Cincinnati.

Angels starter C.J. Wilson retired the first 10 batters before issuing one-out walks to Chris Heisey and Votto. Brandon Phillips stepped up and blasted a low and inside fastball deep over the left field fence for a 3-0 lead in the fourth. Cincinnati tacked on another run in the inning on an RBI single by Frazier.

Reds starter Mat Latos struck out six through four innings before he was tagged for a solo home run by Howie Kendrick to lead off the fifth. He was lifted after allowing a two-run shot to Alberto Callaspo with two outs in the seventh to cut the lead to 4-3.

GAME NOTEBOOK: The Reds recalled OF Derrick Robinson to replace Ryan Ludwick on the active roster. Ludwick had surgery Wednesday to repair a right labrum tear that occurred in Monday’s season opener. Robinson, a fourth-round pick of the Royals in 2006, spent six seasons in the Kansas City minor-league system before he was signed in the off-season by the Reds. … Latos had lost seven of his last eight starts in the month of April. … Pujols and Josh Hamilton, key free-agent acquisitions by the Angels the last two off-seasons, are a combined 0-for-15 with five strikeouts to start the season.
