Recap

Royals 3, Indians 2: Salvador Perez homered and Ervin Santana tossed seven shutout innings as host Kansas City staved off a late Cleveland rally in the opener of its 10-game homestand.

Santana (3-1) turned in his fourth straight quality start, allowing six hits with no walks. The Indians scored twice in the ninth before Greg Holland struck out Jason Kipnis with a runner at third for his sixth save.

Perez put Kansas City ahead in the second with a two-run homer off Scott Kazmir (0-1), who gave up two runs on five hits over five innings. Cleveland used seven pitchers, including five in the seventh inning.

The Royals snapped the Cleveland bullpen’s consecutive scoreless inning streak at 20 innings when Rich Hill walked Eric Hosmer with the bases loaded with two outs in the seventh. Kansas City, which has won four of its last five games, needed the insurance run after Holland allowed two runs in the ninth.

Michael Brantley provided the key two-out hit with a two-run triple in the ninth, but Holland ended the game by fanning the slumping Kipnis. The Indians loaded the bases with one out in the third against Santana before Nick Swisher grounded into an inning-ending double-play.

GAME NOTEBOOK: The teams will play a day-night doubleheader on Sunday after Friday’s scheduled series opener was rained out. Cleveland’s Justin Masterson will face Kansas City’s Jeremy Guthrie in the first game, and the Indians’ Corey Kluber and the Royals’ Will Smith will start the nightcap. … Kansas City’s starting pitchers have worked at least six innings 16 times in the first 20 games. … Indians SS Asdrubal Cabrera (quad) and C Carlos Santana (flu) returned after missing Wednesday’s series finale against the White Sox.
