Recap

Royals 3, White Sox 2: David Lough hit a two-run homer and Jeremy Guthrie pitched seven strong innings as visiting Kansas City defeated Chicago in the opener of a four-game series.

The Royals pushed the tiebreaking run across in the seventh when George Kottaras laid down a bunt single with runners on first and second and none out. White Sox catcher Bryan Anderson fielded the bunt on the third-base side and threw wildly to first to allow Justin Maxwell to score from second.

Guthrie (15-12) permitted two runs, four hits and one walk to notch his second win in his last six starts. Luke Hochevar pitched the eighth and Greg Holland worked around a two-out single in the ninth to record his 46th save to surpass the franchise mark shared by Dan Quisenberry (1983) and Jeff Montgomery (1993).

Chicago had the early edge in the second inning on Paul Konerko’s homer to left off Guthrie. The Royals took the lead in the fourth on Lough’s blast off Andre Rienzo (2-3) before Adam Dunn tied the score in the sixth with a mammoth two-out shot to right.

Rienzo was charged with three runs and four hits in six-plus innings.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Konerko’s homer was the 434th of his career and moved him into a tie for 42nd place with Juan Gonzalez and Andruw Jones. … Lough and 3B Mike Moustakas each had two of Kansas City’s seven hits. … White Sox 2B Gordon Beckham returned from a quadriceps injury and was hitless in three at-bats.
