Recap

Royals 5, White Sox 1:
James Shields eased through seven scoreless innings and David Lough homered as visiting Kansas City registered its fourth straight win.

Shields (5-7) scattered eight hits and recorded 14 outs via the ground ball to even his record at 4-4 in 15 career starts against Chicago. Kelvin Herrera allowed a run in the eighth, but Lorenzo Cain and Mike Moustakas each recorded an RBI single in a three-run ninth to seal the win.

Miguel Tejada added a sacrifice fly and Billy Butler had a pair of hits for the Royals, who moved within two games of .500 at 49-51.

Jose Quintana (5-3) struck out five but absorbed the loss after allowing two runs on six hits in seven innings. Conor Gillaspie hit a solo home run in the eighth as the White Sox fell for the fourth time in five games.

Lough belted a 2-2 changeup into the bullpen in right field in the third and Tejada provided some insurance when his drive to center plated Salvador Perez in the seventh. Lough scored the final run in the ninth-inning rally on a throwing error by left fielder Casper Wells.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Kansas City, which took two of three from Detroit to open the second half, is within seven games of the Tigers in the American League Central. … Pedro Grifol took over as hitting coach of the Royals after interim coach George Brett resigned on Thursday. Brett returned to his post as vice president of baseball operations. … Chicago 2B Gordon Beckham returned to the lineup after missing five games with a sore left wrist. He went 0-for-3 with a walk.
