Recap

Marlins 6, Braves 2:
Giancarlo Stanton doubled in a pair to highlight a four-run first inning and Jacob Turner made it stand up as host Miami avoided a three-game sweep.

Placido Polanco drove in three and Jeff Mathis had an RBI single for the Marlins, who snapped a five-game slide. Turner (3-1) allowed two runs on four hits in seven strong innings.

Paul Maholm (9-8) started for Atlanta and was charged with four runs on seven hits while walking five in 4 1/3 innings to match his shortest outing since May 11. Chris Johnson drove in a run and scored while Dan Uggla recorded an RBI double for the Braves.

The first two batters reached in the first inning and Stanton worked the count to 2-0 before slamming a double into the gap in left-center. Stanton came in on Polanco’s one-out double to left and Mathis’ single to right-center capped the rally.

Johnson and Uggla struck for back-to-back doubles leading off the second, but Atlanta ran into an out on the base path and could not get to Turner again until Johnson’s RBI groundout in the sixth. Polanco collected his third hit by singling in two in the eighth to put it away.

GAME NOTEBOOK:
Braves LF Justin Upton went 0-for-3 after going 5-for-10 with four doubles and a home run in the first two games of the series. … Turner has allowed two or fewer earned runs in six of his eight starts. … Miami will take Thursday off before hosting the Washington Nationals on Friday while Atlanta will head home for a four-game series against Cincinnati.
