Recap

Royals 4, Red Sox 2: Ervin Santana overcame a shaky first inning to allow two runs in seven frames as visiting Kansas City snapped Boston's seven-game winning streak in the first of a day-night doubleheader.

Salvador Perez had a tiebreaking two-run single and Alcides Escobar clubbed a solo home run as the Royals handed the Red Sox their first loss since April 11. Greg Holland followed Santana (2-1) and two relievers with a perfect ninth for his fourth save.

David Ortiz went 3-for-4 with an RBI double but Ryan Dempster (0-2) remained winless in four outings for Boston. Dempster went seven innings, allowing four runs on six hits while striking out eight to become the first Red Sox starter to give up more than three runs.

Escobar cleared the Green Monster in left to put the Royals ahead 1-0 in the first, but Boston answered with two runs in the bottom of the second on an RBI single by Ortiz and a groundout by Mike Napoli.

Lorenzo Cain continued his red-hot stretch with an RBI double in the fourth before scoring on Perez's two-out, two-run single for a 4-2 lead. Santana permitted half of his six hits in the first inning but retired 11 straight at one point and finished with seven strikeouts.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Red Sox 2B Dustin Pedroia went 1-for-4 and has reached base in all 17 games, tying the franchise record (Pete Runnels, 1959) for second basemen to start the season. ... Cain went 1-for-3 to extend his hitting streak to five games. He's 12-for-19 in that span. ... Boston CF Jacoby Ellsbury extend his hitting streak to 10 games.
