Recap

Tigers 6, Royals 2: Justin Verlander pitched eight strong innings and Prince Fielder had two hits, including his 28th homer, as Detroit defeated visiting Kansas City to start a four-game series.

Verlander (16-8) won for the 15th time in 17 career decisions against the Royals, throwing 114 pitches - 89 for strikes. The right-hander struck out eight while allowing nine hits and two runs as the Tigers remained one game behind the Chicago White Sox in the American League Central.

Fielder’s solo blast, deep into the right-field seats, led off the second inning and Alex Avila’s two-out RBI double made it 2-0 later in the frame. Austin Jackson recorded three hits, including an RBI double in the fifth, and Andy Dirks added two hits and two RBIs for the Tigers.

Verlander escaped two-on, one-out jams in both the fifth and sixth innings. Three of those four outs came on strikeouts.

Alex Gordon belted a solo homer and Billy Butler had three hits and an RBI for the Royals. Butler improved to 21-for-53 against Verlander in his career.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Luke Hochevar (8-15) took the loss for the Royals, allowing five earned runs over 7 1/3 innings. Hochevar gave up 12 hits in each of his two starts against the Tigers this season. … Tigers 3B Miguel Cabrera extended his hit streak to 14 games with a single in the sixth. … Tigers SS Jhonny Peralta broke an 0-for-15 slump with a single in the fifth, but was thrown out trying to stretch it to a double.
