Giants 10, Padres 1: Angel Pagan had two of his three hits during an eight-run third inning and visiting San Francisco routed San Diego in the first game of the three-game series.
Playing its second game since All-Star MVP Melky Cabrera was suspended 50 games for using a banned substance, San Francisco outhit the Padres 15-4 and moved one half-game ahead of the Dodgers in the National League West.
Matt Cain (12-5) improved to 7-11 lifetime against San Diego while giving up one run on four hits with no walks and six strikeouts over eight innings
The Giants grabbed an early lead on Marco Scutaro’s solo homer in the first off Ross Ohlendorf (4-4), who has lost four of his last five starts.
Ohlendorf’s outing turned south in the third when the Giants sent 13 batters to the plate and scored a season-high eight runs on eight hits. Ohlendorf exited after giving up eight runs over 2 1/3 innings.
