Recap
Giants 4, Dodgers 3: Joaquin Arias and Buster Posey homered and Barry Zito tossed six strong innings as visiting San Francisco ended Los Angeles’ postseason hopes.
St. Louis clinched the second National League wild card when the Giants snapped the Dodgers’ six-game win streak behind another solid outing from Zito (15-8), who gave up two runs and six hits with six strikeouts.
The Dodgers pulled within a run on A.J. Ellis’ two-run homer with no outs in the seventh before Mark Ellis was thrown out easily at third while trying to stretch his double into a triple with one out.
Ellis’ baserunning blunder was magnified when Shane Victorino followed with a triple that would have tied the game had Ellis settled for a double. Sergio Romo recorded the final three outs in the ninth for his 14th save, retiring Mark Ellis on a short fly ball to center with a runner at second base to end the game.
Posey went 2-for-4 to raise his NL-leading batting average to .337 for the Giants, who improved to 31-20 in one-run games.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Giants 2B Marco Scutaro went 2-for-4 with two RBIs to extend the longest active hitting streak in the majors at 19 games. …The Giants have won Zito’s last 11 outings. … Dodgers 1B Adrian Gonzalez went 1-for-4 to extend his hitting streak to 14 games.
