Padres 4, Rockies 3: Jesus Guzman belted a three-run homer and rookie Casey Kelly tossed six solid innings as host San Diego evened its series with Colorado at a game apiece.
After Andy Parrino opened the scoring with an RBI double in the second inning, Guzman gave the Padres a 4-0 advantage in the third after crushing a shot to straight-away center field. Guzman deposited a fastball from Drew Pomeranz (1-9) over the wall for his seventh homer - and first since he belted two in a 5-3 win over San Francisco on July 25.
Guzman and Parrino joined Logan Forsythe and Yasmani Grandal with a pair of hits for the Padres, who continued their late surge by winning for the 18th time in 24 games.
Making his fourth career start, Kelly (2-1) looked like a seasoned veteran. The 22-year-old struck out six to avenge a brutal outing against the Rockies on Sept. 2 in which he yielded seven runs on eight hits in 5 2/3 innings.
Chris Nelson had an RBI double and Charlie Blackmon added a run-scoring single to chase Kelly in the seventh inning. Brad Brach allowed DJ LeMahieu's sacrifice fly, but Luke Gregerson struck out a pair in the ninth for his eighth save as the Rockies fell for the eighth time in 10 games.
GAME NOTEBOOK: San Diego honored longtime broadcaster Jerry Coleman by unveiling a statue on Saturday. Coleman, who is the only major league player to see combat in two wars, joined Hall of Famer Tony Gwynn as the only Padres to be represented with statues outside Petco Park. Coleman has 70 years of major league service - including 40 with the Padres. ... San Diego's Cameron Maybin went 1-for-4 to improve to 11-for-21 in his last five games versus Colorado. ... Colorado SS Josh Rutledge, who went 0-for-4 on Saturday, has failed to get a hit in 21 consecutive at-bats.
