Recap
Padres 2, Rockies 0: Kip Wells pitched seven shutout innings in his second start since 2009 and Chris Denorfia recorded an RBI and a run scored as San Diego won only its second road series of the season.
Wells (1-1), who came out of retirement to join the pitching-desperate Padres, scattered six hits to improve to 1-4 lifetime at Coors Field.
Colorado rookie left-hander Drew Pomeranz (0-3), who was recalled Sunday from Triple-A Colorado Springs, allowed one run (unearned), two hits and walked three in six innings in his first major-league start since losing at San Diego on May 7.
San Diego’s Luke Gregerson worked a scoreless eighth inning and All-Star Huston Street struck out two in a perfect ninth for his 12th save in 12 chances.
The Padres scored in the third inning as Denorfia led off with an infield hit, stole second and scored when third baseman Jordan Pacheco threw wild to first after Logan Forsythe’s blooper landed behind the mound.
Denorfia lined a 3-2 pitch for a single to right field with two outs in the seventh inning to drive in Alexi Amarista and give San Diego a 2-0 lead.
Padres rookie catcher Yasmani Grandal, one day after becoming the first player in history to homer from both sides of the plate for his first two major-league hits, went 0-for-4 with two strikeouts.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Carlos Gonzalez, who was given Sunday off, was the only Rockies player selected to the National League All-Star team, while Street is San Diego’s lone representative. … To make room for Pomeranz, the Rockies sent reliever Guillermo Moscoso to Colorado Springs. ... Reliever Matt Belisle extended his Colorado season-high scoreless streak to 11 1/3 innings with a scoreless eighth.
