Diamondbacks 6, Padres 2: Paul Goldschmidt hit one of four Arizona doubles and Trevor Cahill tossed six strong innings as the Diamondbacks won their third straight game.

Cahill (12-11) won his third straight start for Arizona, which remained 4 1/2 games behind St. Louis in the race for the second wild-card spot in the National League with 14 games to play.

San Diego took a 2-0 lead in the top of the fourth on RBI singles by Will Venable and John Baker before the Diamondbacks answered in the bottom half of the inning with Miguel Montero’s RBI double off Edinson Volquez (10-11), who gave up four runs over six frames.

Arizona pulled ahead with three runs in the fifth when Adam Eaton tripled in a run and scored on a Volquez balk. Goldschmidt later doubled to deep right center to score Justin Upton.

Ryan Wheeler tripled in a run in the eighth and scored on an error as the Diamondbacks improved to 5-2 on their eight-game homestand.
