Recap

Diamondbacks 3, Padres 2: Miguel Montero drove in two runs with two doubles and Ian Kennedy tossed eight strong innings as host Arizona won the opener of the three-game series.

After giving up one run on 30 pitches in the first inning, Kennedy (14-11) settled down and improved to 7-1 in 11 career starts against the Padres.

J.J. Putz allowed one run in the ninth before recording his 30th save for Arizona, which remained six games behind St. Louis in the race for the second wild-card spot in the National League. The loss dropped the Padres seven games behind the Cardinals.

The Diamondbacks pulled ahead in the bottom of the first when Paul Goldschmidt singled in a run and scored on Montero’s double off Eric Stults (6-3), who lost for the first time since rejoining the Padres’ rotation on Aug. 6.

Arizona added an insurance run in the fifth when Montero’s two-out double scored Justin Upton from second base. The win was just the Diamondbacks’ second over the Padres in their last 10 meetings.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Arizona CF Chris Young left the game in the first inning after aggravating his right quad injury. … The Diamondbacks snapped a seven-game losing streak to the Padres at Chase Field dating back to 2011. …Padres CF Cameron Maybin was not in the Padres' lineup Tuesday due to soreness in his left Achilles.
