Diamondbacks 3, Dodgers 2: Gerardo Parra had an RBI single to snap a tie in the sixth inning and Trevor Cahill tossed seven solid frames as host Arizona overcame an early deficit to sweep an abbreviated two-game series with sputtering Los Angeles.
Justin Upton had an RBI single and a sacrifice fly to plate Paul Goldschmidt on both occasions for the Diamondbacks, who have won five of their last seven to move four games behind St. Louis in the race for the second wild card. The Cardinals suffered a 3-2 setback to San Diego earlier on Wednesday.
Adrian Gonzalez ripped a two-run double in the first inning and Luis Cruz collected two hits for the second straight game for the Dodgers, who fell for the 14th time in 21 contests and remained one game behind St. Louis. The Dodgers will open a four-game series against the visiting Cardinals on Thursday.
After Upton leveled the contest at 2-2 with a two-out RBI single to chase starter Aaron Harang (9-9), Parra fisted an offering from reliever Randy Choate in the hole between shortstop and third base to plate Miguel Montero.
Cahill (11-11) overcame a shaky first inning to retire 12 of his next 14 batters to improve to 3-0 in five starts versus the Dodgers this season. Cahill scattered four hits and struck out seven.
Brad Ziegler retired the side in the eighth inning and David Hernandez worked the ninth for his fourth save.
Harang yielded three runs on four hits and as many walks in 5 2/3 innings to take the loss.
