Recap

Rangers 3, Mariners 2: Goevany Soto belted a two-run homer and Mike Napoli added a solo shot as visiting Texas averted a three-game sweep.

Ryan Dempster (7-2) won for the sixth time in seven starts, striking out eight and allowing two runs on six hits in 6 2/3 innings as the Rangers maintained a four-game lead atop the American League West entering Monday's four-game showdown with second-place Oakland.

Mike Adams escaped a one-out bases loaded jam in the eighth before Joe Nathan worked around a two-out single in the ninth for his 35th save to move Texas two games ahead of the New York Yankees for the best record in the AL.

Jason Vargas (14-11) gave up three runs on eight hits in six innings and Eric Thames and Brendan Ryan hit solo homers in the seventh inning for Seattle, which lost for the seventh time in 10 games.

The Rangers got all their runs in the fourth inning. Napoli hammered a 2-2 breaking ball from Vargas well over the 388-foot sign in left-center and Soto followed with a two-run shot two batters later for a 3-0 lead. It marked Napoli's fifth straight season with 20 homers.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Michael Young extended his hitting streak to 12 games with a fifth-inning single for the Rangers, who were 0-for-10 with runners in scoring position. ... Seattle has homered in 13 consecutive games and has gone deep 25 times in their last 21 home games.. ... Rangers CF Josh Hamilton missed his sixth consecutive game with equilibrium and vision issues that are related to a sinus infection and his availability for the start of Monday's four-game series against Oakland is unknown.
