Recap

Athletics 8, Rockies 5: Brandon Moss homered twice as light-hitting Oakland handed host Colorado and its major league-worst pitching staff a sixth straight loss.

Seth Smith doubled twice and drove in two runs in his return to Coors Field for the Athletics, who entered with a .220 batting average – lowest in baseball. Oakland erased a 4-0 lead with five runs in the third inning en route to snapping a three-game losing streak.

Brandon Inge and Cliff Pennington added solo shots and Inge had an RBI double as Oakland tied a season high with four home runs.

Todd Helton hit his 353rd career home run and Tyler Colvin also went deep for the Rockies, who received another sub-performance from their starting rotation that entered with a major league-worst 6.17 ERA.

Jeremy Guthrie (3-5), who was Colorado's opening day starter, allowed seven runs and eight hits in five innings. He has allowed 31 runs (27 earned) and 48 hits in his last five starts.

Bartolo Colon (6-6) allowed five runs and nine hits in five innings to win his second straight outing.

Two relievers bridged the gap to Ryan Cook, who pitched the ninth for his first career save.

After Colvin’s leadoff homer in the first, Michael Cuddyer, Chris Nelson and Wil Nieves delivered RBI singles as the Rockies batted around to take a 4-0 lead.

Smith, who played his first five seasons in Colorado, started Oakland’s big inning with a two-run double, followed by Inge’s run-scoring double and Moss’ first homer. Pennington’s solo shot came one batter later to put the Athletics ahead for good 5-4.

Moss’ second homer – a solo shot in the fifth inning – capped his first career multi-homer game. Inge’s blast came in the seventh.

GAME NOTEBOOK:
Helton moved into a tie for 81st on the career home list with Houston’s Carlos Lee. … Guthrie is 1-3 with an 8.90 ERA at home. … The Athletics improved to 2-5 in interleague play; the Rockies fell to 0-7, all at home. … Colvin reached over the wall in the eighth inning to take away what would have been Pennington’s second homer of the game.
