Recap

Angels 7, Rangers 4:
Jered Weaver worked seven strong innings to become the first 20-game winner in the American League and Mark Trumbo drove in three runs as visiting Los Angeles kept pace in the race for the wild card.

Mike Trout and Chris Iannetta added solo home runs for the Angels, who remained two games back of the Oakland Athletics for the second wild-card spot. The Athletics routed Seattle 8-2.

Nelson Cruz and Adrian Beltre homered for Texas, which missed a chance to secure at least a wild-card spot. The Rangers’ magic number to clinch the AL West remains at three.

Trout led off the game with his 29th home run onto the batter’s eye in center field. Iannetta sent his ninth blast out to left in the third inning to give Los Angeles a 2-0 cushion. Trumbo went to work, doubling in a run off Ryan Dempster (7-3) in the fourth and plating Howie Kendrick with another double in the sixth to make it a 4-1 lead.

That was plenty for Weaver (20-4), who struck out five while allowing two runs and five hits. The right-hander has won four straight starts since missing an outing earlier this month. Kevin Jepsen surrendered a pair of runs in the eighth but Ernesto Frieri worked a scoreless ninth for his 22nd save.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Trout’s homer gave him 125 runs, surpassing Vladimir Guerrero’s 124 in 2004 for the franchise record. His third-inning triple gave him 173 hits, breaking Wally Joyner’s rookie record. … Angels 3B Alberto Callaspo contributed a defensive highlight in the third, jumping and reaching into the second row to steal a foul ball away from the fans along the third base side. … Dempster was charged with four runs on seven hits in 5 2/3 innings. His four walks marked his highest total since joining Texas.
