Athletics 6, Angels 5: Brandon Moss and Yoenis Cespedes homered and Dan Straily struck out eight in 6 2/3 innings as visiting Oakland defeated Los Angeles for the second consecutive night.

Jerry Blevins induced Howie Kendrick to hit into a game-ending double play with runners on first and third to earn his second career save as Oakland won for the 14th time in 17 games to remain three games behind the Texas Rangers in the American League West.

Moss hit a two-run blast in the fourth to put the Athletics ahead to stay, and Straily (2-0) allowed two runs and seven hits in his fourth major-league start as Oakland won its 11th consecutive road game.

Oakland led 4-3 before adding two insurance runs with two outs in the ninth. Coco Crisp delivered a run-scoring triple into the right-field corner and scored when Torii Hunter misplayed the ricochet off the wall.

The runs proved important when closer Grant Balfour struggled in the ninth. Balfour walked the first two hitters and allowed run-scoring singles to Hunter and Albert Pujols before he was pulled in favor of Blevins. The left-hander struck out Kendrys Morales before getting the crucial double-play grounder.

Oakland continues to hold the AL’s top wild-card spot. Los Angeles, which had won 11 of 12 games prior to the series, dropped 7 1/2 games behind the Rangers and fell 2 1/2 games out of the AL’s second wild card spot.

Cespedes homered in the second off Jerome Williams (6-8) to give Oakland the early lead. Vernon Wells lined a two-run shot to left in the bottom of the inning to give the Angels a 2-1 lead.

Cespedes singled with one out in the fourth and Moss followed with his second homer in two nights to give the Athletics a 3-2 lead. Stephen Drew hit a sacrifice fly later in the inning.

Hunter homered with two outs in the seventh to finish Straily’s night. Williams allowed four runs and five hits in 3 1/3 innings while making his first start since July 19.

Moss has hit 10 homers on the road in just 82 at-bats. … Angels OF Mike Trout went 3-for-4, marking the 15th time he has had three or more hits this season. … Straily has allowed six homers in two starts against the Angels. … Pujols is 1-for-9 in the series. … Oakland RHP Brandon McCarthy was released from the hospital six days after being hit in the head with a line drive off the bat of Angels SS Erick Aybar.
