Mariners 2, Angels 1: Hisashi Iwakuma tossed 7 1/3 scoreless innings and Jesus Montero and Carlos Peguero belted solo homers as Seattle snapped its seven-game home losing skid to Los Angeles.
Jered Weaver's third loss in five outings prevented him from joining Tampa Bay's David Price, Washington's Gio Gonzalez, Cincinnati's Johnny Cueto and New York Mets knuckleballer R.A. Dickey with a majors-leading 17 wins. Weaver (16-4) permitted two runs on eight hits and walked four in 5 1/3 innings.
The setback also snapped the Angels' winning streak at five contests. Los Angeles fell 3 1/2 games in back of Baltimore for the second wild-card spot. The Orioles recorded an 8-3 triumph over the New York Yankees on Sunday.
Iwakuma (6-3) posted his fourth consecutive victory - and second versus the Angels - after scattering five hits and striking out seven. The 31-year-old Japan native started the winning streak with a solid seven-inning outing versus Los Angeles on Aug. 11.
Josh Kinney retired both batters he faced to strand runners in scoring position in the eighth inning. Tom Wilhelmsen permitted a two-out RBI single to Howie Kendrick in the ninth before securing his 22nd save.
Montero opened the scoring in the fourth inning after depositing an inside fastball from Weaver into the Mariners' bullpen past the left-center field wall. The blast was Montero's 15th, tying him with Kyle Seager for the team lead. Montero, who went 2-for-3, improved to 5-for-8 with four homers in his career versus Weaver.
Peguero doubled the advantage after leading off the fifth inning with a towering blast to right field.
