Angels 5, Mariners 3: Alberto Callaspo hit a pinch-hit grand slam and Albert Pujols homered for the fourth time in five games as visiting Los Angeles won its fifth
straight.
Callaspo’s second career grand slam occurred in the sixth inning off Felix Hernandez and helped the Angels beat Seattle for the third straight day.
Jerome Williams (5-2) allowed three runs and five hits in six innings. Ernesto Frieri recorded the final four outs – striking out three – for his second save as Los Angeles moved into second place in the American League West.
The Angels loaded the bases in the sixth on singles by Mark Trumbo, Howie Kendrick and Erick Aybar. Hernandez (4-4) struck out Kole Calhoun for the first out before Callaspo batted for Bobby Wilson and lofted the ball into the right-field stands to give Los Angeles a 5-2 lead.
Justin Smoak homered in the six to bring Seattle within two.
Pujols gave the Angels a 1-0 lead in the fourth with a homer to center to tie Carl Yastrzemski for 34th place on the all-time list with 452 homers.
Seattle scored twice in the fifth on run-scoring singles by Mike Carp and Dustin Ackley.
Hernandez allowed five runs and 10 hits in six innings while dropping to 6-10 in his career against the Angels. He struck out seven and walked one.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Pujols is 6-for-11 with three homers and six RBIs in the series. … Seattle has removed Brandon League as closer after the 2011 All-Star blew his third save in his last five opportunities Friday. … Angels outfielder Mike Trout had two hits after going 1-for-18 over the previous four games. … The grand slam was the fourth Hernandez has allowed in his career.
