Recap

Padres 3, Pirates 1: Edinson Volquez matched a season high with 10 strikeouts and Will Venable had two RBIs as host San Diego continued its mastery of weary Pittsburgh.

Everth Cabrera recorded his second straight three-hit game for the Padres, who have won 16 of the last 19 meetings with the Pirates.

Pittsburgh's Kevin Correia (9-8) went 4 1/3 innings, one day after throwing 24 pitches in two innings of relief in the Pirates' 6-3 victory in 19 innings at St. Louis. He allowed three runs (two earned), seven hits and threw 72 pitches Monday.

Volquez (8-9), who was 1-2 with a 13.89 ERA in his last four starts, allowed one run, five hits and three walks in 6 2/3 innings.

Pittsburgh's National League wild card lead shrunk to one-half game over Los Angeles and 1 1/2 over St. Louis.

The Padres took a 2-0 lead in the first when Venable's RBI single followed Cabrera's leadoff double. Venable scored on Yasmani Grandal's groundout.

Venable's two-out single in the second drove in Cameron Maybin to make it 3-0.

The Pirates got on the board when Neil Walker drove in Andrew McCutchen with a single in the sixth.

Volquez left with two on in the seventh before reliever Brad Barch struck out McCutchen to end the threat. Pittsburgh again had two runners on in the eighth, but Luke Gregerson retired Gaby Sanchez and Rod Barajas.

Dale Thayer pitched the ninth and struck out McCutchen with a runner on to end the game and record his seventh save in nine chances.

Pittsburgh reliever Kyle McPherson made his major-league debut and pitched two scoreless innings with two strikeouts.
