Recap
Pirates 3, Giants 1: James McDonald struck out 10 over seven sensational innings and Mike McHenry homered as Pittsburgh evened its weekend series with visiting San Francisco at a win apiece.
McDonald (9-3) was masterful in his final start before the All-Star break, limiting the Giants to a run on four hits without walking a batter en route to his fourth straight victory. He improved to 5-1 with a 1.69 ERA in 10 home starts, and has allowed two runs or fewer in four of his last five outings.
Jason Grilli struck out the side in the eighth inning to set the table for Joel Hanrahan, who worked around a leadoff single to record his 23rd save.
Pittsburgh gave McDonald all the offense he would need with single runs in the third and fourth innings. Neil Walker put the Pirates on the board with a double to the center-field wall that scored McDonald from first base, and McHenry doubled the lead with a solo blast to left field off Giants starter Ryan Vogelsong (7-4).
The Giants finally solved McDonald in the sixth, plating their lone run on a two-out RBI single from Ryan Theriot. Pittsburgh responded in the bottom half as Pedro Alvarez smacked a double to left that scored Andrew McCutchen, who reached on a leadoff single.
Vogelsong was charged with three runs on eight hits over seven innings while walking one and striking out five. It marked his 15th quality start in 16 outings this season.
GAME NOTEBOOK: The game was delayed nearly a half-hour by rain in the bottom of the third inning. ... McHenry has four home runs and 12 RBIs in his last nine games. ... McDonald recorded his first double-digit strikeout performance since whiffing 11 in a 3-2 triumph against Washington on May 17.
