Recap
Pirates 7, Cardinals 3: Third baseman Pedro Alvarez launched a first-inning grand slam as visiting Pittsburgh won its fourth straight.
Alvarez turned on a 3-2 fastball from Lance Lynn (10-4) and deposited his second career grand slam 432 feet away in the right-field seats. The rally started with two outs when Andrew McCutchen and Garrett Jones singled ahead of a walk to Neil Walker.
Alvarez, who has eight RBIs in the series, extended Pittsburgh’s home run streak to eight games. McCutchen went 2-for-4, making him 6-for-9 in the series with five runs scored, but left in the seventh with an apparent left wrist injury sustained while making a diving catch in the third inning.
In his second start since being sidelined two months with shoulder inflammation, Jeff Karstens (1-2) pitched seven innings, allowing two runs on four hits while fanning seven.
St. Louis lost its third straight despite two hits and an RBI from Matt Holliday, who is on a 25-for-50 tear.
