Cardinals 4, Pirates 1: Lance Lynn continued his impressive transformation to full-time starter with seven strong innings as visiting St. Louis shut down Pittsburgh.

Lynn (3-0), who is occupying injured Chris Carpenter's spot in the rotation, allowed four hits, one run, walked one and struck out four, lowering his ERA to 1.42. He didn't allow a runner to reach second base after the first inning and also contributed a hit and scored a run.

Daniel Descalso homered and Carlos Beltran drove in a run and scored another as the Cardinals won for the fifth time in six games.

Mitchell Boggs pitched a perfect eighth and Jason Motte worked around a leadoff walk in the ninth to earn his third save in three chances.

Pittsburgh starter Charlie Morton (0-1) allowed two runs (one earned), four hits, three walks and struck out six in five innings.

Pittsburgh took a 1-0 lead on Alex Presley's inside-the-park home run in the first. Presley's shot to deep center field was nearly caught by Skip Schumaker, who crashed into the wall and didn't immediately get up.

St. Louis tied it in the second when Yadier Molina's drove in Beltran with a double and Beltran put the Cardinals ahead 2-1 in the fifth with a single to score Lynn.

The Cardinals added insurance runs in the ninth on Descalso's blast into the seats in right and Rafael Furcal's RBI double after pinch hitter Shane Robinson reached on second baseman Neil Walker's throwing error.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Schumaker, who came off the disabled list Friday (oblique strain), had the wind knocked out of him and left the game in what the Cardinals said was manager Mike Matheny's decision. Schumaker was replacing starting center fielder John Jay, who strained his right shoulder running into the wall against Cincinnati Thursday. ... Lynn started in his first two major league appearances before pitching 26 games in relief, including 10 in the postseason during the Cardinals' run to the World Series title. ... The Pirates made four errors, which led to two unearned runs.
