Recap

Brewers 6, Padres 5: Ryan Braun homered and drove in three in support of Yovani Gallardo as host Milwaukee took the rubber game from San Diego.

Martin Maldonado added a three-run homer and Norichika Aoki scored twice for the Brewers, who have beaten up on the major-league worst Chicago Cubs and San Diego over the last two series, taking four of six games.

Milwaukee took the lead with a four-run sixth. Braun started the onslaught with an RBI single and Maldonado followed a walk to Rickie Weeks with a two-out blast. Maldonado got a first-pitch fastball from Padres starter Anthony Bass (2-6) and blasted it out to straightaway center for his third homer.

Braun added a two-run shot - his 15th - in the seventh inning.

Gallardo (5-5) went seven innings and was charged with two runs - one earned - and five hits while striking out five and walking a pair.

The Padres pushed two runs across in the ninth against Milwaukee closer John Axford and cut it to 6-5 when Jose Veras came on and issued a two-out walk with the bases loaded. But Veras struck out John Baker looking on a 3-2 curveball to earn his first save.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Will Venable homered and doubled in a three-hit day and Chase Headley added an RBI single for the Padres. … Braun’s blast snapped an eight-game homerless streak and pushed his hitting streak to six games. … With the Cubs (20-40) winning earlier in the day, San Diego (20-41) now owns the worst record in the majors.
