Recap
Padres 5, Brewers 2: John Baker drove in a pair and scored a run and Ross Ohlendorf was strong in relief as visiting San Diego picked up a rare victory and evened the series at Milwaukee.
Chase Headley added three hits and Will Venable doubled in the tying for the Padres, who entered with the worst record in the major leagues after dropping 11 of their previous 13 games.
Due to a string of injuries to the starting rotation, Andrew Cashner is being summoned from the bullpen and stretched out but was only able to go the first 2 1/3 innings in his first start. Ohlendorf (1-0) took over from there and went 4 1/3 innings, allowing one run and five hits.
The Brewers had a 2-1 lead in the fifth when Venable struck, slamming a first-pitch breaking ball from Michael Fiers off the top of the wall in right field, scoring Baker from first.
San Diego took the lead in the following frame. Baker came up with the bases loaded and ripped a single back up the middle to score a pair.
Fiers (1-2) ended up allowing four runs on 10 hits in six innings. The rookie right-hander has yielded eight runs and 18 hits in 11 innings over his last two starts.
Yonder Alonso added an RBI in the seventh and Huston Street worked the ninth for his fifth save.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Street has allowed one run in 11 2/3 innings this season, including two appearances since returning from a month-long stint on the disabled list. … Rickie Weeks doubled in a run for the Brewers, snapping his latest hitless streak at four games. He is batting .159. … Ohlendorf, who started the season in the Boston Red Sox organization at Triple-A, has allowed two runs in 5 1/3 total innings over two appearances for the Padres.
