Recap

Reds 4, Cubs 2:
Ryan Ludwick’s two-run double was the decisive blow during an eighth-inning rally that helped Bronson Arroyo and visiting Cincinnati past slumping Chicago.

Drew Stubbs led off the pivotal inning with a double against reliever James Russell (5-1) and moved to third on a base hit by Brandon Phillips. Ludwick followed with a drive into left field, deep enough to score Phillips from first with the go-ahead run.

Wilson Valdez tacked on an insurance run with an RBI single, the fifth hit allowed by Russell in the inning. Aroldis Chapman pitched a 1-2-3 ninth to save it for Arroyo (8-7), who retired 19 of the last 20 batters he faced. Chapman has not allowed a run since June 24 and has struck out 41 against only two walks in his last 20 2/3 innings.

The Reds increased their lead to 4 1/2 games over Pittsburgh in the National League Central. The Pirates lost 5-0 to San Diego on Saturday.

Arroyo limited the Cubs, who have lost 10 of their last 11 games, to five hits in his eight innings. Both Chicago runs scored on a base hit by David DeJesus in the second.

Cincinnati’s comeback spoiled an excellent start by former Red Travis Wood, who struck out eight over seven strong innings for Chicago. He allowed only one run on five hits and a walk.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Cincinnati is 41-4 when Stubbs scores a run. ... Ludwick’s 28 RBIs since the All-Star break are third-best in the majors. ... Chicago has lost Wood’s last six starts. ... The Reds have won 12 of their last 13 Saturday games. ... Injured Cincinnati 1B Joey Votto had a piece of floating cartilage removed from his left knee Saturday, likely delaying his return until the end of August.
