Dodgers 3, Cubs 1:
Matt Kemp homered and Clayton Kershaw tossed seven strong innings as host Los Angeles won its second straight over Chicago.

After Chicago scored first on Alfonso Soriano’s RBI double in the fourth, Kemp answered in the bottom half with a two-run shot just over the glove of Joe Mather in center field for his 16th homer.

Kershaw (9-6), who threw a shutout in his last start, gave up one run on three hits with seven strikeouts. Kenley Jansen worked a perfect ninth for his 21st save.

Kemp went 1-for-3 and is batting 14-for-29 over his last seven games for Los Angeles, which remained one-half game behind San Francisco in the National League West.

Chris Volstad (0-8) is winless in his last 21 starts dating to last season, but turned in a strong effort in his first game since being recalled from Triple-A Iowa. In his third stint with the Cubs this season, Volstad allowed two runs on six hits over seven innings.

The Dodgers added an insurance run in the eighth when Shane Victorino led off with a double and scored from third when Starlin Castro couldn’t handle Hanley Ramirez’s grounder.

Chicago has lost four straight and six of its last eight road games. The Cubs managed only three hits and have been outhit 17-7 in the first two games of the series.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Kershaw improved to 3-0 in three career starts at home against Chicago. …Joe Blanton will make his first start for the Dodgers on Sunday since being acquired from Philadelphia. RHP Stephen Fife was optioned to Triple-A Albuquerque to make room for Blanton. … Cubs RHP Matt Garza (triceps) threw a successful bullpen session on Saturday and hopes to return in time to start Tuesday in San Diego.
